During the last few hours, Neonazis have attempted to carry out anti-migrant pogroms in central Athens. Clashes between Anti-fascists and migrants, on the one side, and fascists and riot police on the other side take place in the centre of the city while the rally in Propylea is starting. At about 18:25 several dozens of fascists assisted by riot police units attempted to attack to Villa Amalias squat near Victoria Square. The squaters defended Villa Amalias succesfully and forced the Nazis off the streets. Riot police responded with tear gas in order to make way for the Nazis to escape. Earlier in front of Athens School of Economics Nazis were chased by anti-fascists.

In Athens, over the past three days, there have been two murders and one attempted murder. A Greek man was killed on May 10th in a largely immigrant district, triggering a police-sponsored fascist pogrom that is still taking place in the immigrant neighborhoods. Immigrants had their car windows smashed out while they were driving, many have been beaten on the street, and a Pakistani family had their house fire-bombed. This pogrom continued with the murder of a 21 year old immigrant by fascists in the early morning of May 12th. The police have been directly sponsoring and protecting this racist terror and have also cooperatively attacked the anarchist squats Skaramagka and Villa Amalias.

It is with the utmost seriousness that solidarity is requested from all those outside Greece. It is asked that people choose one of these two general options for action.

1) Have a manifestation, action, or other such gesture that directly impacts the functioning of either a Greek National Tourism Office, Consulate, or Embassy. These efforts will be felt by the Greek State itself and would be direct solidarity with the struggle.

2) Have a manifestation, action, or other such gesture that is directly related to the struggle against the police in your own city or town. Information and leafleting about the situation in Athens will have little resonance there. Choose actions that will have the maximum resonance in your own geographical areas and help strengthen the international anarchist struggle against the police forces of each State.

The target date for these actions should be the weekend of May 13-15. This is short notice, and actions soon after this date will still be welcome. However, if possible, please act during this time period as the weekend is the time when the situation will likely intensify in Greece.

On the morning of May 12th, the Refectory of the University of Athens in Central Athens was occupied to be used as a base for counter-information and action. The building is located near to where the police attacked the demonstration. A demo is called today for 6 PM in Propylea. These are the first gestures in an escalation of the struggle against the State, their police, and their fascist paramilitary.

#482 | 21-year old Bangladeshi migrant stabbed to death in Athens, almost certainly by fascist thugs; 4-5,000 march in the city against police repression; fascist pogrom during the day sees at least 15 more migrants hospitalised

In the early hours of May 12th a 21-year old Bangladeshi migrant was stabbed to death in the Kato Patisia district of Athens. The victim, wrongly reported in mainstream news (and reposted on this blog) as a Pakistani migrant, was lethally stabbed almost certainly by fascist thugs who have launched a series of attacks in the centre of Athens following the murder of a Greek man on Tuesday night, on the corner of Ipirou and Tritis Septemvriou Street. Eye witnesses report that the murderers of the 21-year old man chased him around the neighbourhood and spoke Greek. On Wednesday night alone fascist thugs roamed through a number of districts of central Athens, injuring at least another fifteen migrants most of which were hospitalised.

Meanwhile a demonstration called in the city in response to the murderous police attack against the General Strike demonstration of May 11th saw approximately 4-5,000 people gather together. The crowd was once again attacked by riot police, at the exact same point where a 30-year old demonstrator was beaten by police on Wednesday. The demonstrator, Yiannis K., is still in an artificial coma and is fighting for his life. It is expected for a clearer picture of his medical condition to emerge by midday Friday.

Demonstrations against the repression of Athens’ General Strike demonstration were held in at least another fifteen cities across Greece on Thursday night.
