Fire investigators determined a blaze that destroyed an Ithaca police officer’s Etna home was arson, state police said today.

Sgt. Bryan Bangs had fired the shots that killed a suspect during an arrest in February but was cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury and special prosecutor.

State fire investigators, with the aid of City of Ithaca fire investigators and the State Police Forensic Identification Unit, conducted an investigation Sunday into the blaze’s cause. State police are now conducting a criminal investigation with the assistance of the City of Ithaca Police Department, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department, Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office and Ithaca College Public Safety.

A neighbor’s quick response may have made a big difference in the the blaze’s outcome. A resident of the Etna neighborhood was up early to let out a family dog around 4 a.m. when she saw the flames in the pre-dawn darkness. She said she called 911 while her husband ran to the house with a flashlight. Bangs had also called 911, state police officials said.

« He hollered and hollered and someone said, ‘I’m back here,’ » the neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified by name, said Sunday.

She said her husband went around to the back of the house and saw Bangs on a portion of the roof, where he had climbed through a window to escape the flames. The neighbor said he urged Bangs to jump, saying he would catch him. Bangs told him where to find a ladder and climbed down to safety. Bangs was the only occupant of the house at the time of the fire.

Etna, Freeville and Dryden firefighters responded and doused the blaze. Other neighbors, even immediately next to the property, said they slept through the fire and the emergency response.

The house is considered a total loss.

In February, Bangs was involved in a fatal shooting of an Ithaca man, Shawn Greenwood, who had been previously convicted and served prison time for several drug offenses. Bangs was part of a multi-agency drug team attempting to arrest him at a store parking lot when Greenwood drove his van into one of the officers and Bangs fired to stop him to protect himself and the other officer. A grand jury review of the shooting released July 1 found no basis for criminal charges against Bangs in the death of Greenwood.

Today Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and not 2nd degree murder, or 1st degree murder as many would have desired. Portlanders mobilised at short notice to speak out against the police and the fresh verdict, marching to Martin Luther King Boulevard from the park shouting, « ACAB – All coppers are bastards » amongst other terms. The police were all over the scene, monitoring beforehand from afar as people gathered for the event. A number of windows were smashed at a Bank of America on Martin Luther King Blvd. and at Portland Community College – Cascades Campus. At all times the police urged the protesters to move on to the sidewalk or they would be arrested whilst two bike cops led the plethora of police cars.

The protesters split up fairly rapidly at the end and at least 3 arrests were made.

Les pompiers ont été appelés à ce bâtiment de quatre étages en construction sur la Quatrième Avenue, jeudi vers 5H30. Le feu a été éteint en quelques minutes, mais les dégâts étaient faits. Le feu, bien que contenu dans une pièce, a diffusé de la fumée à travers l’immeuble, noircissant les murs tout neufs. Il a aussi brûlé des installations électriques au premier et deuxième étage.
L’heure à laquelle le feu a pris est inconnue, mais c’était après que les ouvriers aient quitté le chantier mercredi soir.
Le feu a été mis à ce qui devait devenir un important centre de police, a déclaré Rick Dougherty, manager pour le projet.

Tôt ce matin à Baltimore, nous avons trashé trois véhicules de police, en crevant les pneus, en aspergeant de peinture, en foutant de la merde sur les poignets de portes et à l’intérieur par une vitre ouverte. Tout ça pour leur dire « Fuck you ». Et pour exprimer notre solidarité avec les émeutes et les pillages à Oakland après le « verdict Oscar Grant » [du nom d'un gars abattu à bout portant par un keuf sur les quais du métro; le flic en question a été condamné à un maximum de quatre ans ferme], et les 80 personnes (au moins) arrêtées là-bas.

Une voiture de patrouille de la police de Tacoma, garée à l’extérieur de la maison de l’officier en question, a été vandalisée tôt ce matin, a déclaré le ministère.

Les vitres de la voiture étaient brisées, et trois pneus crevés. Les vandales ont peint sur le panneau arrière et le coffre les mots: « Oscar Grant était là », selon les dires du porte-parole de la police de Tacoma.

L’officier a surpris les vandales, qui se sont échappés en courant. Un chien policier a parcouru les alentours, mais n’a pas retrouvé les suspects.
